Variable costs

An expense that varies according to production or sales levels within the business. These include the costs of raw materials, energy use, distribution charges or staff wages. As production increases, variable costs will also rise. Companies for which variable costs make up the majority of their total costs are less likely to see significant changes in earnings as any increase or decrease in their sales and revenues are usually fairly equally matched by changes in costs.
