Vegas bettor puts down massive $500K moneyline bet on Ohio State to upset Alabama

While most of the bets on Monday night’s College Football Playoff national championship game have come in on Alabama, there’s one bettor who is backing Ohio State heavily.

According to BetMGM, one bettor in Las Vegas put down a whopping $500,000 on the Buckeyes. And the bet isn’t on the Buckeyes covering the spread — which is now up to nine points. The bet is on the Buckeyes to win outright.

The moneyline bet has odds of +260. If Ohio State wins, the full payout will be huge: $1.3 million.

According to data released by BetMGM on Monday morning, Alabama had received 55.3% of the bets and 59.7% of the money on Monday night’s game. Alabama opened as a seven-point favorite.

Alabama is 8-4 against the spread in 2020, but has failed to cover in its last two games. Alabama was a 19.5-point favorite against Notre Dame in the CFP semifinals, but the Irish covered the spread by scoring a touchdown in the final minute. The Tide also failed to cover against Florida in the SEC title game.

Ohio State, the CFP’s No. 3 seed, upset No. 2 Clemson 49-28 in the semifinals behind a monster performance from quarterback Justin Fields. The Buckeyes, 4-3 against the spread this season, were 7.5-point underdogs against Clemson.

The total for Monday night’s game opened at 76.5 but has dropped to 74.5. At BetMGM, most of the bets (61.4%) and money (58.2%) have come in on the under. Both teams’ games have swayed more to the over this season. The over is 7-5 in Alabama games and 4-2-1 in Ohio State games.
