Video Shows the Moment a Bodybuilder's Pec Tears While Trying to Bench 220kg

When you go back to the gym, are you planning on lifting as heavy as possible as quickly as possible? If the answer to that is yes, check out the following video from popular powerlifter and bodybuilder Larry Wheels' IG account.

The video shows fellow bodybuilder 23-year-old Ryan 'Big Rig' Crowley tearing his pec muscle while attempting to bench 220kg. Unsurprisingly, the video is pretty graphic.

Writing on his own Instagram account, Crowley said that he had completely tore his pec tendon "off the bone", but thanked fans for their support and said that he would be getting surgery to fix his pec straight away. "Praying that it gets it shape back and doesn’t ruin the rest of my career In bodybuilding before it’s even started," he wrote.

Were it not for Wheels and fellow training partner Charlie Johnson the incident could have been much worse, and Wheels also helped Crowley after the accident by setting up a GoFundMe page, which fans have generously donated more than $38,000 to.

Still, Crowley's bad luck didn't end when his accident happened. Updating fans after his surgery, he wrote: "The surgery was only meant to be one hour but unfortunately took four hours. It took longer than expected because Dr Shine had to completely reconstruct my pec, as I tore the tendon off the bone and then the muscle off the tendon. I also had a minor tear in my bicep. Dr also had some issues re attaching the tendon due my bones being so dense, my bones broke the tools used to re attach the tendon."

Thankfully, Crowley is now recuperating in hospital, and what has he learned from all of this? Well, hopefully not to lift heavier than he's capable of and to always lift with proper form. Need help with that last part? Take a look at our guide to performing the bench with perfect form.
