Viewers share emotional reactions to David Attenborough's Extinction: The Facts
Sir David Attenborough's powerful documentary, Extinction: The Facts, aired on BBC One last night (13th September), exploring how the biodiversity crisis could have extreme consequences for us all.
The hour-long programme came with a stark and honest warning about the potential extinction of a number of animal species and received an emotional reaction from many viewers. While David's much-loved Planet Earth depicted a more joyous portrayal of nature, this documentary was made to hold our attention and force us to listen — and that it did.
The UK's favourite naturalist began by warning: "We are facing a crisis, and one that has consequences for us all." What followed was a plea to all of us to take responsibility, as David investigated what biodiversity loss could mean for our future.
On Twitter, many viewers expressed that it was the "most important" TV programme ever made. One said: "Maybe the most important TV programme ever made. People need to sit up and take notice that there's a bigger narrative. The overriding message is it's not too late."
While another added: "There is no other story more important than this one today. It won't make easy viewing, but please do watch David Attenborough tonight. The loss of biodiversity at this rate can only lead to one outcome."
Carrie Symonds, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's fiancée, also posted on Twitter saying: "Everyone should watch this. It's massively difficult to watch - I cried - but it is vital. We can't ignore it. It's time to act."
Scenes offered an insight into the shocking devastation humans have wrought on the natural world. From overfishing to climate change and pollution, the documentary identified the key drivers of biodiversity loss, explaining what we can all do to make a change.
