Virgin Media is advising customers with a specific broadband router to change their passwords due to a hacking risk.

The company said that those with a Super Hub 2 router need to change both their network and router passwords if they are currently using the default option which is displayed on the devices' stickers.

The advice was issued following an investigation by Which?, who found that hackers could get access to home networks on this router.

While Virgin Media said that the amount of customers with this router was 'small', the number is still thought to be over 800,000 people.

However, Virgin Media said the issue was common with other routers around the same age as the Super Hub 2, and was not exclusive to their model.

A spokesman told the BBC: The security of our network and of our customers if of paramount importance to us. We continually upgrade our systems and equipment to ensure that we meet all current industry standards.

'We regularly support our customers through advice and updates and offer them the chance to upgrade to a Hub 3.0 which contains additional security provisions.'

Carrie-Ann Skinner, Technology expert at the Good Housekeeping Institute says: 'Virgin Media has confirmed there has been an issue with its Super Hub 2 router that can leave home owners open to having their broadband network accessed by hackers.

'Here at the Good Housekeeping Institute we advise Virgin Media customers that have the Super Hub 2 to change the password for their home Wi-Fi network immediately.

'Make sure the password does not contain any personally identifiable information, such as your date or birth or maiden name, and is a combination of upper and lowercase letters and numbers.

'Furthermore, make sure the password is unique and not used on any other accounts. If your original password was used to access other online accounts, you need to change the passwords for them immediately.'
