Vitol-backed battery projects connect to UK power grid

LONDON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Two large-scale battery projects in Britain, developed by Vitol-owned VPI Immingham and renewable investment firm Low Carbon have connected to the British power grid, the companies' joint venture VLC Energy said on Tuesday. ** The 50-megawatt (MW) portfolio includes a 40-MW battery park in Glassenbury, Kent in the south of England and a 10-MW park in Cleator, Cumbria in the north. ** Both projects have already won contracts with Britain's power grid operator, National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news) , to provide super-fast balancing services, called enhanced frequency response (EFR). ** They also have contracts under Britain's capacity market to provide back-up electricity.
