Voting Glitch As Super Thursday Polls Open

Polls have opened across the UK in the first major test of political opinion since the General Election being dubbed "Super Thursday".

As voting got under way, some people in Barnet experienced difficulties with registration and voters were asked to "return to their polling station later if possible".

Barnet Council apologised for the problem and, at 10.40am, said the issues had been resolved.

A spokesman said: "We are advising people who were unable to vote this morning to return again before the polling stations close if at all possible. We apologise for the problems we have experienced."

David Cameron arrived with his wife, Samantha, at a Westminster polling station to cast his vote and Jeremy Corbyn arrived at an Islington primary school to cast his vote.

Labour London mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan voted at his local polling station in Streatham, while Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith voted in Barnes.

In England, there are 2,743 seats up for grabs on 124 councils and 36 areas are choosing new Police and Crime Commissioners.

North of the border, all 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) are up for election for their five-year terms.

In Wales, all 60 Assembly Members are being elected, also for five years.

Welsh voters will also elect Police and Crime Commissioners for Gwent, Dyfed-Powys, North Wales and South Wales.

In Northern Ireland, all 108 Members of the Legislative Assembly are up for election for their five-year terms.

There are also mayoral elections in Bristol, Liverpool, Salford and London.

In the Greater London Assembly, 14 seats are elected by first-past-the-post and another 11 from party lists.

There are also parliamentary by-elections for the seats of Ogmore and Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough.
