Waitrose has revealed what customers are stocking up on in the run-up to Christmas – and there's one festive food in particular we're adding to our baskets already.

The supermarket says they've seen a 70% increase in sales of frozen canapes, as shoppers plan ahead in the hope of entertaining without having to worry about food going to waste.

The most items popular so far include butterflied king prawns and breaded king prawns which are both up 50% and 44% respectively and searches for ‘Christmas canapés’ are also up 133% on waitrose.com, they say.

Waitrose is also seeing new festive food trends emerging when it comes to entertaining in line with potential COVID restrictions. 'DIY charcuterie boards' and 'indoor winter picnic ideas' are both trending right now, too.

The food retailer is also predicting ‘canapas’ (canapés tapas) is going to be a trend for the festive season, as customers look to enjoy a number of different mini dishes for their starter, main and dessert, paired with a glass of fizz.

Perhaps unsurprisingly lots of us are getting into the Christmas spirit early by putting our decorations up, and getting our festive shopping done, after what's been a difficult year.

Waitrose's buyers say these search trends prove that lots of us are also thinking ahead about food and planning a slightly different Christmas, but still with entertaining in mind.
