Was not invited, claims Mamata; Visva-Bharati says invite sent on Dec 4

Claiming that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had not been invited to the Visva-Bharati University centenary celebrations, which was also virtually attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Trinamool Congress on Thursday accused the Centre of ‘insulting’ her.

The TMC’s claim however is less than truthful as the invite was sent to Mamata Banerjee by Visva-Bharati University Chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty on December 4, a good 20 days before the function.

However, in line with her claim, Mamata skipped the celebrations of the university, which was founded by Nobel laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1921

Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party, the TMC said: “Had Tagore been alive today, they would have targeted him, just like Mamata Banerjee is being targeted for speaking of Tagore's vision, his ideology.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the event virtually and spoke about the pivotal role played by the Visva-Bharati University in India’s freedom movement and furthering the cause of universal brotherhood.

PM Modi said that the literary legend's vision was also the essence of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative launched by his government for the making of a self-reliant India.

"Visva-Bharati is a venerable source of constant energy to the country," he said.

Narendra Modi said the institution not only strengthened the spirit of nationalism but also promoted inclusiveness that strengthened “vishva-bandhutva" (universal brotherhood).

Praising the institution for its remarkable achievements in varied fields like art and literature, and science and innovation, PM Modi urged its students to reach out to the artisans in the region to explore ways to find national and international markets for their produce.

"That will make them self-reliant. Atmanirbhar Bharat is the initiative for India's prosperity which will aid in global prosperity," he said.

Visva-Bharati is also the oldest Central University in the country. In May 1951, Visva-Bharati was declared to be a Central University and an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament.
