The first trailer for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes dropped on Thursday, April 27, giving fans a glimpse at Hunter Schafer in the franchise’s prequel. The trans actor plays Tigris Snow, the cousin and confidant of Coriolanus Snow, an antagonist of the original films but protagonist of this new instalment.

While the Euphoria star only makes a brief appearance in the teaser, she is seen telling her relative, “It’s not just about winning.”

“Everything is about winning,” he responds.

The feature is set 64 years before the first original film, and is based on the 2020 novel by Suzanne Collins, who also authored the best-selling trilogy. The book has been adapted by Michael Arndt and Michael Lesslie, with Collins serving as one of the production’s executive producers.

The logline reads: “Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol.

“With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor,” it continues.

“Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and a snake.”

As well as Hunter Schafer, Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes also stars Peter Dinklage, Josh Andres Rivera, Jason Schwartzman and Viola Davis.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film will hit cinemas worldwide on November 17, 2023.
