Despite being retired for more than 20 years, the greatest player to ever lace up a pair of skates is still making hockey history.

On Sunday, Wayne Gretzky's final game-worn Edmonton Oilers sweater sold for US$1.452 million at Grey Flannel Auctions, surpassing Paul Henderson's 1972 Summit Series sweater, which went for $1.3 million, as the most expensive hockey jersey ever sold at auction.

The Great One's record-breaking jersey is from the 1988 Stanley Cup Final, in which Edmonton swept the Boston Bruins for its second-consecutive championship, as well as the the fourth and final Cup victory of Gretzky's career. He also took home the Conn Smythe Trophy, scoring 12 goals and notching 31 assists in 19 games.

Gretzky was shockingly dealt to the Los Angeles Kings in the offseason in one of the most famous trades in North American sports history.

Henderson's jersey was the one he wore when he scored the winning goal in the dying seconds of the legendary 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union, making him a national hero and engraving his name in hockey lore forever.

Gretzky also owns the record for the most expensive hockey card after his 1979 O-Pee-Chee rookie card sold for $3.75 million last May, making it the seventh most expensive trading card of all time.
