These impressive pictures show the Scottish village of Braemar blanketed in snow as temperatures plummeted to their lowest in 25 years.

The village in Aberdeenshire recorded lows of -22.9C which the Met Office said was the coldest temperature recorded in the UK since 1995.

Forecasters said the last time a temperature below minus 20C was recorded in the UK was 23 December 2010.

The snow created stunning scenes, with banks of the white stuff said to be 2ft (70cm) deep in places – up to some people's waists.

The record-breaking temperatures come as large areas of the UK were blanketed in snow earlier this week.

Simon Blackett, 66, said: "I am 6ft 7in and the snow is above my knees.

"Imagine what it’s like for a normal-sized person – certainly up to the waist.

"We have had snow on the ground for months now, and recently it’s just not stopped snowing so we have about 9in to a foot of soft powdery snow on top of what was already there. It’s about 70cm in total.

"We obviously get snow most years up here but this year the sheer, physical quantity has been quite something. It’s definitely the heaviest amount of snow I have seen in a long time.”

PR consultant Sarah Ogilvie, 26, said: "The snow is waist deep in some places, and our car is completely stuck – it's crazy.

"All the deer have come down from the mountains which is so lovely, and they are just walking about the streets.

"We have had to have help from other locals to dig us out a path to our front door so we can get out.

"Thankfully we are just a two-minute walk from the local shop, so we can at least get out for supplies.

"I can't believe I am living in the coldest place in the UK right now."

The latest plunge in temperatures comes after the coldest temperature recorded in the UK since January 2010 was recorded on Tuesday night, when temperatures dropped to -22.3C (-8.1F) at Altnaharra in the Highlands.

Cities such as Manchester and Carlisle could see temperatures drop to -4C (24.8F) on Thursday, and York is expected to have lows of -6C (21.2F).

The forecast prompted responses from local councils in England, with residents warned to take “extra care” while the cold snap lasts.
