Weatherman's dog interrupts live forecast: 'It just gets funnier'

A Canadian meteorologist’s dog became a viral sensation when he interrupted a live forecast.

Global News Toronto’s weatherman Anthony Farnell had some adorable help during a weather report in August. His dog, a mini golden doodle aptly named Storm, wandered onto a live forecast. The small brown canine appeared in front of the green screen as Farnell did his voice-over. Twitter user @rosevalentee spotted the hilarious moment, making it viral news when her tweet earned over 2.2 million views.

Storm hopped around the set, totally oblivious to the cameras. Eventually, Farnell told the dog, “Storm, move,” and conceded, “Yes, Storm is in the building, getting some treats, walking on thin air.”

“My new favorite work-from-home problem. I don’t know why, it just gets funnier,” @rosevalentee said in the Twitter caption.

However, her tweet wasn’t totally accurate. Farnell actually brings Storm to work on most days.

“I like having him with me because it sure beats leaving him at home alone,” the meteorologist told Pawsh Magazine in 2019. “It makes it much easier to work the longer days knowing that my pooch is happy and with me. He always gives me a needed break, either just by being there for a quick cuddle or forcing me to get out for some fresh air in the middle of the day.”

Global News released the full clip of the blunder on YouTube and had a lot to say about the incident.

“Last Friday, a hungry-for-treats Storm invaded the set in the middle of Anthony’s weather report,” the video caption stated. Storm was “demanding treats, even as Farnell was explaining to Ontarians what weather they would be facing that weekend and discussed the dangers posed by Hurricane Ida further south. Both consummate professionals, Anthony finished his segment without a hitch while Storm sated his hunger.”

This isn’t the first time viewers got a taste of Storm (the dog has a dedicated Instagram, after all). Farnell told Today that viewers actually helped choose his name, but in 2012, Storm made his first appearance on live television.

“I was working on my weather maps, and I assumed Storm was under my desk,” Farnell told Today. “A couple minutes later, I glanced up to the TV monitor in front of me, and there was Storm, popping his head up from under the News Desk, right beside the anchor during our live broadcast.”
