Week 3's top NFL game: Lamar Jackson vs. Patrick Mahomes on Monday night

Yahoo Sports NFL senior writers Charles Robinson and Terez Paylor select a game this week that will leave us buzzing heading into Tuesday.

Game of the week? This will arguably be the greatest NFL game we’ll see until January.

In a short amount of time, Patrick Mahomes vs. Lamar Jackson has lived up to all the hype. It’s on its way to being the next defining chapter in the league’s history of great generational quarterback battles, a continuation of Bart Starr vs. Johnny Unitas, Roger Staubach vs. Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino vs. John Elway and Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady.

We can get granular on this one, but we don’t have to. Tune in for the two players who should own the NFL for the next decade and beyond, and you’ll walk away happy.

Here’s the best game of September, folks. And it should be a preview of the AFC championship game.

Against the defending Super Bowl champs, we’ll get a chance to see how much Lamar Jackson has improved as a passer — early indications are it’s a lot — and the Chiefs will get to prove their championship mettle against a team aiming to supplant them.

Keep an eye on the Ravens’ run game. In the Chiefs’ four losses last year, the team that beat them gashed them via the run. Baltimore lost to K.C. 33-28 last year, but the Ravens ran for over 200 yards and four touchdowns, and they didn’t have Marcus Peters then.

Should be fireworks on multiple fronts on Monday night.
