Key Jobs Report for the Fed

The U.S. Labor Department releases its monthly jobs report on Friday—a key piece of economic data as the Fed considers raising interest rates in September. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal expect the economy added another 215,000 jobs in July. Another signal for the Fed, which has been concerned about the slow pace of inflation, will come on Monday, when the Commerce Department releases consumer income and spending data.

First GOP Debate of 2016 Race

Most of the 17 candidates vying to be the Republican nominee for the 2016 presidential race will appear on stage together Thursday for the first debate of primary season. Fox is limiting the debate to just 10 candidates, setting off a scramble among those on the bubble to secure a spot. Fox has said it may expand the debate to 11 if there’s a tie in the polls. The remaining candidates will appear at an event before the debate.

New EPA Rules for Power Plant Emissions

New Environmental Protection Agency regulations aimed at cutting power plant emissions will be released Monday. The new rules are expected to maintain ambitious emissions-reduction targets but give companies more time to meet them. The new regulations, which are a cornerstone of President Barack Obama’s climate change policy, are strongly opposed by Republicans and some Democrats on Capitol Hill.

Obama Makes Case for Iran Deal

President Obama will try to persuade members of Congress to support the Iran nuclear deal when he delivers a speech at American University in Washington Wednesday. The agreement has been harshly criticized in Congress, which is expected to vote in September on whether to approve or reject it. Mr. Obama has vowed to veto a resolution to reject it. The head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog will also meet on Wednesday with members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to respond to growing criticism of the agency’s inspections regime.
