SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (8 to 13 February):
SBA, Border Eagle Group launch EagleCares Badminton Programme
The Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) and Borden Eagle Group of Companies, manufacturer of the Eagle Brand Medicated Oil, are setting up the EagleCares Badminton Programme to bring the sport to children who are residents in participating children's homes.
This community programme will take the form of a monthly outing for the children, comprising a two-hour activity conducted at a badminton sports hall. Each participant will also receive badminton apparel and equipment to help them on their badminton journey.
Among the beneficiaries participating in the programme are the Jamiyah Children’s Home and the Salvation Army’s Gracehaven and Haven.
The programme was launched at the OCBC Arena on Tuesday (9 February) by President Halimah Yacob and Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin. During the launch, Borden director Adam Yeo also presented to SBA president Lawrence Leow a cheque of $200,000, which will go towards funding the programme and supporting SBA’s other development programmes.
Lion City Sailors' appoint Chew Chun-Liang as CEO
Singapore Premier League club Lion City Sailors have appointed former Silver Generation Office director of operations Chew Chun-Liang as the club's first chief executive officer.
The 44-year-old will be in charge of operationalising the Sailors' ambition to become a successful professional football club that is home to an elite hub of youth development. This includes putting in place a structure combining the operations of the Lion City Sailors Football Academy and the club proper, as well as implementing a pathway for young grassroots footballers all the way through to the elite senior players.
His top priority is to oversee the proposed integrated training facility that will become Singapore’s first fully functional training centre when completed in 2022.
Besides his tenure at the Silver Generation Office, Chew also has 23 years' experience as a naval officer with the Republic of Singapore Navy.
“Chun-Liang’s management and leadership capabilities were evident from all that he has accomplished in the various aspects of his work. But more than that, his deep connection to Singapore football and what it means to Singapore and Singaporeans make him an ideal candidate for the Sailors,” said club chairman Forrest Li.
