SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (8 to 14 March):
Albirex open new season with win; Sailors draw 3-3 with Rovers
Defending champions Albirex Niigata (Singapore) opened the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) season with a 3-1 win over Hougang United at Jurong East Stadium on Saturday (13 March).
Goals from Kiyoshiro Tsuboi (25th and 86th minutes) and Takahiro Tezuka (39th) earned Albirex the victory, with Jarrel Ong (42nd) replying for Hougang.
At Jalan Besar Stadium, the Lion City Sailors – who broke the league's transfer record with their $3 million signing of Brazilian Diego Lopes – failed to hold on to a 3-1 lead as they drew 3-3 with Tampines Rovers on Saturday.
Song Ui-young (5th) and Gabriel Quak (6th and 58th) scored for the Sailors, while Madhu Mohana (19th) and Yasir Hanapi (63rd and 68th) replied for the Rovers.
On Sunday, the Young Lions and Balestier Khalsa played out a 3-3 draw at Jalan Besar Stadium. Ilhan Fandi (13th), Khairin Nadim Rahim (58th) and Muhammad Hami Syahin (84th) scored for the hosts, while Balestier's scorers were Hazzuwan Halim (34th) and Shuhei Hoshino (45th and 49th).
And at Our Tampines Hub, Geylang International beat Tanjong Pagar United 2-1 with two goals from Brazilian import Matheus Moresche (19th and 74th). Blake Ricciuto (21st) scored for the Jaguars.
Philippe Aw takes over as Young Lions head coach from Nazri Nasir
Philippe Aw will take over Nazri Nasir as head coach of the Young Lions for the 2021 Singapore Premier League season, as the former Lions captain continues his rehabilitation following a mild stroke in December last year.
Nazri, 50, will remain as part of the coaching staff in an advisory role this year. In addition, he will monitor eligible players in SPL clubs in his role as head coach of the national men's Under-22 team, as part of preparations for October's U23 Asian Cup qualifiers and November's SEA Games.
Aw, 44, had already been leading the Young Lions with pre-season preparations, and will also assist Nazri with the U-22s during the international windows this season.
SSA, Neo Garden raise over $500,000 for ST School Pocket Money Fund
The Singapore Swimming Association (SSA), together with its official food and beverage partner Neo Garden, raised more than $500,000 in a fundraising drive that sold some 30,000 Curry Bombs. The amount of money raised will go to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund as well as SSA’s One Team Singapore Fund.
The fundraising campaign was unique in that SSA, a non-for-profit organisation, raised funds for another charity – The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. The donation to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund will help support more than 400 primary school students with school pocket money for a year.
The funds raised for the SSA will be used to apply for one-for-one matching grants under the One Team Singapore Fund. This will help benefit coaches, athletes, clubs and the rest of the aquatics community who have been impacted by COVID-19.
Veteran sports administrator Milan Kwee dies at age 74
Veteran Singapore sports administrator Milan Kwee, who was one of Singapore National Olympic Council's (SNOC) vice-presidents, died on Tuesday (9 March) at the age of 74.
Kwee, who was part of Singapore's first taekwondo national team that competed at the inaugural 1973 World Championships, had served as the Singapore Taekwondo Federation's president over two separate terms. The first was a two-year term in 1983, before he returned as the federation’s chief from 2004 to 2018.
Before he was elected as SNOC's vice-president, Kwee was on the executive committee of the SNOC as a representative of the National Sports Associations, a position he had held since June 2012. He also led the Singapore contingent as the chef de mission at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
