SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (25 to 31 January):
Water polo great Tan Hwee Hock dies, aged 90
Tan Hwee Hock, who guided Singapore’s water polo team to their only Asian Games gold medal in Manila in 1954, died on Tuesday (26 January) at age 90.
According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Swimming Association, Tan was a major factor in Singapore winning the gold medal, after he scored a hat-trick in the final against Japan.
He also represented Singapore at the inaugural Asian Games in New Delhi in 1951, winning a silver in water polo and another silver in the 4x100m swimming medley.
Tan went on to become coach of the national water polo team, leading them to a bronze medal in the 1962 Asian Games and a silver in the 1966 edition.
He was the vice-president for water polo with Singapore Amateur Swimming Association when the national team clinched a bronze medal at the 1986 Asian Games in South Korea, and also won Coach of the Year in 1987.
AIA iRun for Vitality from 8 to 28 February
The second edition of AIA iRun for Vitality virtual run will be held from 8 to 28 February, and is free for the public to register online from now until 7 February.
There are three race categories: the Individual Challenge, the Team Challenge (for teams of four) and the Corporate Challenge (for selected companies on invitation).
To help track the runs, there will be live leaderboards for participants across Individual and Corporate challenges—recorded based on total distances clocked. Final rankings and winners will be announced on the 42Race Facebook page on 10 March.
There will also a social media contest during the race period, with participants invited to post on Instagram sharing Chinese New Year-themed videos or photos of themselves running or walking to clock up the miles. The eight most creative submissions will each win a Garmin Vívosmart 4 warch.

Polar Mineral Water extends partnership with SPL, FAS to 2025
Polar Mineral Water, Singapore Premier League’s (SPL) longest-serving sponsor, has committed to continuing their partnership with the league through to 2025.
The renewal of the sponsorship is worth about $1.5 million, and will see the brand remain as the Official Mineral Water of the Singapore Premier League, Singapore Cup and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS).
The deal extends SPL’s and FAS’ partnership with Field Catering and Supplies, which distributes Polar Mineral Water, to a total of 22 years since it began in 2003.
