The Weibo (NASDAQ:WB) Share Price Has Gained 126%, So Why Not Pay It Some Attention?

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. Long term Weibo Corporation (NASDAQ:WB) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 126% in five years. The last week saw the share price soften some 3.9%.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Weibo achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 53% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 18% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days.

A Different Perspective

Weibo shareholders gained a total return of 41% during the year. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 18% over half a decade This suggests the company might be improving over time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 4 warning signs we've spotted with Weibo .
