Weighted average

An average in which different components of a data set are given different weights depending on their relative importance. Each item being averaged is multiplied by its own weight and these figures are added up. The total is then divided by the sum of the weights. Stock indices are often weighted for price so that they will move more when bigger stocks rise or fall than when smaller stock prices change. This is also called the weighted mean.
