We're Hopeful That Fate Therapeutics (NASDAQ:FATE) Will Use Its Cash Wisely

We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, Fate Therapeutics (NASDAQ:FATE) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 113%. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

Given its strong share price performance, we think it's worthwhile for Fate Therapeutics shareholders to consider whether its cash burn is concerning. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Check out our latest analysis for Fate Therapeutics

How Long Is Fate Therapeutics' Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. As at June 2021, Fate Therapeutics had cash of US$696m and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$131m. That means it had a cash runway of about 5.3 years as of June 2021. Importantly, though, analysts think that Fate Therapeutics will reach cashflow breakeven before then. If that happens, then the length of its cash runway, today, would become a moot point. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Well Is Fate Therapeutics Growing?

One thing for shareholders to keep front in mind is that Fate Therapeutics increased its cash burn by 239% in the last twelve months. Of course, the truly verdant revenue growth of 263% in that time may well justify the growth spend. Considering both these factors, we're not particularly excited by its growth profile. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

How Hard Would It Be For Fate Therapeutics To Raise More Cash For Growth?

There's no doubt Fate Therapeutics seems to be in a fairly good position, when it comes to managing its cash burn, but even if it's only hypothetical, it's always worth asking how easily it could raise more money to fund growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.

Since it has a market capitalisation of US$6.9b, Fate Therapeutics' US$131m in cash burn equates to about 1.9% of its market value. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.

So, Should We Worry About Fate Therapeutics' Cash Burn?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Fate Therapeutics is burning through its cash. For example, we think its revenue growth suggests that the company is on a good path. Although we do find its increasing cash burn to be a bit of a negative, once we consider the other metrics mentioned in this article together, the overall picture is one we are comfortable with. One real positive is that analysts are forecasting that the company will reach breakeven. After taking into account the various metrics mentioned in this report, we're pretty comfortable with how the company is spending its cash, as it seems on track to meet its needs over the medium term. An in-depth examination of risks revealed 4 warning signs for Fate Therapeutics that readers should think about before committing capital to this stock.
