We're so here for The Queen cracking jokes about a statue of herself

Despite the ongoing pandemic and her husband, Prince Philip, recently being admitted to hospital for an infection, it's business as usual for Queen Elizabeth II (well, after close to 70 years in the game, did you expect any less?). Yesterday saw Her Majesty once again tapping into the wonders of modern technology and hopping onto a Zoom call, in order to watch a statue of herself being unveiled over in South Australia.

Although she tends to keep up quite a neutral persona, The Queen is also known for having a bit of an impish and fun sense of humour (see: the anecdote about her finding a slug in her salad and tricking a member of a staff in revenge), and she was certainly bringing the jokes this time around.

Telling the Governor of South Australia, Hieu Van Le, and the state's Premier, Steven Marshall, who were also on the call, what she thought of the statue, HRH joshed, "I would think possibly it might be quite alarming to suddenly see it out of the window – you'd think, gracious, has she arrived unexpectedly?" Which sounds as though she's certainly a fan of the monument and can see the likeness!

Check it out here for yourself:

During the call, the Queen also enjoyed hearing about how the statue (which is situated outside the Government House in Adelaide, South Australia) has already become a selfie hot spot. Upon hearing that, she chuckled, "Oh really?"

The governor then added, "They feel very close to you through standing in front of the statue" and the Queen remarked that she was grateful that the sculptor of the piece, a Robert Hannaford, would be sending her a scaled-down version of the tribute as a keepsake.

"That's very kind," she said in response. "I'm glad it's not quite as big as the original statue." (Which is fair enough, as we imagine that might be a rather hefty thing to receive through the post and to attempt to accommodate somewhere in your home, even if that home is Windsor Castle).

During the call, Her Majesty also chatted about the vaccine roll-out and heard about the programme that South Australia has in place to help slow and stop the spread of coronavirus.

So all in all, a very jolly and informative day for Queenie!
