West Ham player ratings vs Chelsea: Arthur Masuaku and Jarrod Bowen steal the show in thrilling London derby win

Arthur Masuaku scored a jaw-dropping late goal as West Ham came back to beat Premier League leaders Chelsea.

After West Ham threatened early on with Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek firing wide, the visitors took the lead as Thiago Silva rose unmarked to head home Mason Mount’s corner.

West Ham almost hit back immediately through Vladimir Coufal, though Silva was quickly back to clear off the line. It took a calamitous mistake from the leaders to bring West Ham level.

Jorginho sold Edouard Mendy short on a backpass and the Chelsea goalkeeper decided to try and turn his way out of trouble instead of clearing, resulting in a foul on Bowen.

Manuel Lanzini stepped up from the spot and sent Mendy the wrong way. Just as West Ham looked to threaten before the break, Declan Rice lost the ball cheaply in midfield and the Hammers were stunned as Mount rifled a stunning volley in at the near post from Hakim Ziyech’s diagonal.

West Ham struck back quickly after the break, however, with Bowen firing a low first-time strike into the far corner from the edge of the box after Coufal had muscled Marcos Alonso off the ball.

Bowen had a golden chance to win it late on but could only prod Michail Antonio’s cross wide on the stretch. That would not matter in the end.

Masuaku was quick to react and sharply take a throw-in while Chelsea were getting into shape in their own third. Antonio nodded it back and as Masuaku looked to bend a cross in, the ball clipped off Ruben Loftus-Cheek and slipped through the hands of Mendy at the near post.

Here is how Jack Rosser rated the Hammers...

Lukasz Fabianski 5

Questions will be asked over his role in Mount’s goal at the near post, however good the strike.

Kurt Zouma 7

Facing his old club for the first time and impressive once more at the back, battling well with Chelsea’s forward line. Moyes will desperately hope his injury isn’t serious.

Craig Dawson 6

Caught under the ball for Silva’s opener as the West Ham back line lost track of the Chelsea defender.

Issa Diop 7

Largely solid performance on his first Premier League start of the season and may fancy his chances of dislodging Dawson going forward. Looked to get his side going on the ball, too.

Vladimir Coufal 7

Plenty of energy down the right, would have had his first West Ham goal were it not for Silva’s block on the line and showed good strength to tee up Bowen.

Declan Rice 7

Sloppy in losing the ball in the build-up to Mount’s first-half goal, but was everywhere in midfield before and after.

Tomas Soucek 7

More of a threat in the box and made some important blocks at the back.

Ben Johnson 6

West Ham are still missing the threat that Cresswell poses down the left. Johnson pulled up as Chelsea broke for their second goal and left Mount alone.

Manuel Lanzini 7

Impressed on his first start of the season in the League. Positive passing and started the move for Bowen’s goal.

Jarrod Bowen 8

Superb pressure to win the penalty and a fantastic finish but should have won it when sending Antonio’s cross wide on the stretch.

Michail Antonio 8

Also at fault for Silva’s opener and still yet to get back amongst the goals but far more influential here and went toe-to-toe with Chelsea’s back line.

Arthur Masuaku 8

Suspect at the back but that goal was superb. Deflected or not, it’s hard to remember one like that.

Pablo Fornals 6

Added some instant energy to West Ham on the break, having been named on the bench for the first time this season.
