What sort of house £1m buys you around the UK

1m house near the sea
In East Lothian £1m gets you 5 bedrooms and 4 acres by the sea.

According to property firm Savills, around 730,000 UK homes – that’s one in 40, or 2.5% of the total housing stock – are now valued at £1m or more. Over half of these are outside London, and Wales has seen the largest increase in property millionaires – up 146% in the past three years – though only 0.3% of its homes fall into this category. Here’s what £1 million buys you around the country.

1. Dunbar, East Lothian, offers over £995,000

Myreside – an attractive period farmhouse laid out over three floors – is expected to break the £1m barrier. Set in over four acres (top pic), it has five bedrooms, two bathrooms, tons of entertaining space and comes with kennels that could be returned to their previous use or converted into offices or additional accommodation, subject to getting planning permission. The wide sandy beach at Belhaven Bay, a popular surfing spot, is a three-minute drive. Available through Galbraith.

2. Brampton, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, £1m

£!m house
In Cambridgeshire £1m gets you six bedrooms, large grounds and countryside views.

A detached double-fronted Victorian villa with six bedrooms and four reception rooms, sitting in grounds of approximately two thirds of an acre and looking out over fields, a country park and lakes. There are features such as bay windows, an original staircase and plasterwork, but it’s a little dated and could do with an extra bathroom. Find out more from Peter Lane & Partners.

9. Braggington, Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, £1.05m

16th century timber framed cottage
The exterior of this property has been little changed since the 16th century.

It’s unlikely that the exterior of Grade II listed, timber-framed Braggington House has changed much since it was built in the 16th century, though amazingly, a zoo was run in the grounds during the 1960s. Inside it’s very much geared up for family life, and some of the rooms could do with a makeover. It contains five bedrooms, three attic rooms that are ripe for conversion into further sleeping space, a one-bedroom annex and an abundance of features – check out the exposed wall and ceiling timbers, open fireplaces, stonework, leaded light windows and original doors.
