A website set up to show which Hotpoint or Indesit washing machines are faulty has crashed as thousands of worried customers attempted to find out whether their model was at risk of catching fire.

The site – https://washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.co.uk/ – is experiencing "technical problems". Customers that want to check whether their machine is affected should call the British call centre on 0800 316 1442, or if in the Republic of Ireland should call 0818 903 281.

A statement on the website read: "We deeply apologise for the delay and concern this has caused. We will continue to update everyone through our social media channels and we thank you for your patience."

Yesterday, Whirlpool was forced to recall more than half a million of the washing machines over concerns they posed a fire risk, after a flaw with the door-locking system was discovered.

The defect is present on machines sold between October 2014 and February 2018 and owners are being urged to check immediately if their machines are affected. It is possible that others bought outside of this time may also be affected.

Customers are recommended to turn the machines off until the recall, expected to take place in early January. If it must be used, a wash should be no hotter than 20 degrees.

The latest recall comes after the company finally launched a full recall involving 500,000 dryers in July.

It acted after being criticised for resisting demands for a full recall and instead carried out a lengthy “safety campaign” that saw 1.7 million products modified.
