Why The 28% Return On Capital At EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) Should Have Your Attention

What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in EOG Resources' (NYSE:EOG) returns on capital, so let's have a look.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for EOG Resources:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.28 = US$9.9b ÷ (US$41b - US$5.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).

So, EOG Resources has an ROCE of 28%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 21% earned by companies in a similar industry.

So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at EOG Resources thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.

Our Take On EOG Resources' ROCE

To sum it up, EOG Resources has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific.
