Why you need to go on holiday in January (hint: it's SUPER cheap)

January is officially the cheapest month of the year to travel, with crazy package holiday prices available from £61 per person (yes, really!).

New research has revealed that it’s a whopping 204 per cent cheaper to take a short-haul trip abroad in January than in August, making it our new favourite month for an affordable getaway.

According to travel comparison site TravelSupermarket, you can save a massive 67 per cent on your holiday price by escaping in the first month of the year.

The average price per person per night for a city break in January 2019 is £53.60 (including flights and accommodation). In November, the second cheapest month of the year, it rises slightly to £56.54, and goes up to an average of £57.83 in the third cheapest month, February.

When it comes a trip that’s seven or 14 nights long, you can head to the beach for as little as £51.57 per person in January. March is the second cheapest month for longer beach breaks and costs an average of £54.71.

The most expensive months for an overseas city break tend to be May (average £71 per person per night) and August (£69.70), while the priciest months for a short-haul beach getaway are December (£71.33) and August (£72.84).
