William and Kate release previously unseen photographs of the royal children

The days since Prince Philip's sad death last week have been filled with royal tribute after royal tribute. And now, adding to the celebration of the life of Britain's longest reigning royal consort, Prince William and Kate Middleton have released two previously unseen photographs of their young children along with great-grandparents Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.

On their @KensingtonRoyal Instagram account, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared two pictures from the archives; one of the couple standing alongside the Queen and Prince Philip during a trip to the family's Scottish Balmoral Estate in 2015, featuring an adorable toddling Prince George and a small baby Princess Charlotte in Kate's arms.

The second is a photo taken by Kate Middleton herself - something she's known to do regularly - of Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh surrounded by their seven great-grandchildren in 2018, also on holiday at Balmoral. Now, almost three years on, there are ten great-grandchildren in existence (with an eleventh on the way this summer), after Meghan and Harry welcomed their son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor in 2019, and Zara Tindall and Princess Eugenie both gave birth to baby boys recently.

It's so lovely to see old pictures that were never shared in the public domain; Prince George's adorable little tartan shorts (matching his great-granny's skirt) are almost too much to handle and it's quite frankly a travesty they hadn't been seen sooner.

This isn't the first previously unseen picture of a young Prince George that's been shared this week, however. On Monday afternoon, the Cambridges posted a photograph of George around the age of two riding on a carriage with his late great-grandfather, Prince Philip. Alongside it, Prince William shared a moving tribute to his "Grandpa."

"I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days, wrote the 38-year-old father of three. "I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!"

The royal family will bid an official farewell to the Duke of Edinburgh at his funeral this Saturday, 17 April, where 30 people will be in attendance due to COVID restrictions.
