William And Kate Seek 'New Memories' At Taj Mahal

William And Kate Seek 'New Memories' At Taj Mahal

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are seeking "new memories" on next month's visit to the Taj Mahal.

The 17th century Indian tourist attraction was the backdrop to a famous photo of William's late mother, Princess Diana of Wales, when she visited in February 1992.

The photo of her sitting alone in front of the monument sparked rumours that her marriage to Charles was in trouble.

The two announced their separation later that year.

They divorced in August 1996 and Diana died as a result of a car accident a year later.

Next month, William and Kate will spend seven days touring India and neighbouring Bhutan, with a visit to the Taj Mahal on the final day seen as a highlight.

It will be the first time the couple have visited the two countries, a trip that will be undertaken without their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Their communications secretary Jason Knauf told a briefing: "The Taj Mahal is one of the symbols of India and Their Royal Highnesses cannot wait to see it with their own eyes.

"The Duke of Cambridge is of course aware of the huge esteem his mother, the late Princess of Wales, is held in India and he appreciates the iconic status of the images that exist of the Princess at the Taj.

"He feels incredibly lucky to visit a place where his mother's memory is kept alive by so many who travel there.

"Twenty-four years on from her visit to the Taj, the Duke and the Duchess are looking forward to seeing this beautiful place for themselves and creating some new memories as they say thank you to the people of India at the conclusion of this tour."
