With their busy schedules and all that royal protocol, it's not everyday that Prince William and Kate Middleton get to indulge in a little bit of PDA (that's public displays of affection for those who don't know). It came as a much-appreciated surprise then, when earlier today the couple shared a rare photo of themselves looking more in love than ever on their Instagram.

Sharing a series of photos with their 13 million Instagram followers, the Duke and Duchess proved once and for all that romance really does exist. In the first photo, the couple are laughing as they lovingly look into each others eyes. Another photo shows Kate tenderly embracing her husband as they share a romantic moment.

They captioned the post: "Behind the scenes at the first ever @EarthshotPrize Awards 📸 @chrisjacksongetty for The Royal Foundation." Clearly, the very rare insight into their lives went down a royal treat with fans, as the post racked up nearly half a million likes within an hour of being online. As well as giving the post a double tap, plenty of royal well-wishers took to the comments section to share their love for the pair.

"How lovely to see genuine love and affection," one fan commented, as another wrote "Like a scene from a fairytale." Someone else said "The loveliest pair imaginable," with a fourth fan commenting "Their romance is really regal." We couldn't agree more tbh!

On the topic of why PDA between the Duke and Duchess is few and far between, Myka Meier, the founder of Beaumont Etiquette and a royal etiquette expert, told People magazine that: "There is no actual etiquette or royal protocol that says the couple must refrain from PDA." Although, she pointed out, "it is rare to see royal couples holding hands on official outings."

She continued: "While we are much less likely to see The Duke and Duchess holding hands in public, we often see Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall holding hands. It’s all simply a matter of preference for each couple and is also likely dependent on the nature of the event they are attending."

Personal preference isn't the only reason we don't see a lot of Royal PDA though. As Meier explains, oftentimes Kate and Wills are working when we see them at public events. And, if the rest of us wouldn't snog our partners on shift, why would the Royal Family?

"[The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are] working representatives of British Monarchy," she emphasises, "The couple are likely to show very little PDA, if any, to remain professional during their designated roles."

Guess we better make the most of this rare romantic post then, eh?
