Woman faces dilemma after mother-in-law moves into her home: ‘I am so ready for her to leave’

A woman is upset her mother-in-law has overstayed her welcome.

She asked for advice on Reddit’s “Am I the A*****” forum. The mother-in-law moved after getting evicted, and the plan was that she only stay temporarily with her son and daughter-in-law until she got back on her feet. Fast forward a year and a half later and the Reddit poster’s husband is refusing to ask his mother to leave.

“My mother-in-law has been living with my husband and me for a year and a half now,” the Reddit poster said. “We let her move in so that she could get back on her feet after getting evicted and going through multiple jobs. I imagined it would take six months to a year max to get her out of here and in a place of her own. Here we are over a year in and she’s still here in our house. To give some background, we just bought our house last January and she moved in with us on Feb. 1, 2020. We didn’t even get a month alone in the house and she moved in. She also brought two loud dogs (we already had three of our own) and moved in before we were married. I am so ready for her to leave.”

But her husband isn’t making any promises about when his mom will move out.

“I finally told my husband that I need some sort of end date. Just a time, a month, a date, something to show me there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” she wrote. “He told me he can’t kick his mom out and he doesn’t want to set a date for her to leave by. I get where he’s coming from but I know myself enough to know I’m going to blow up soon.”

Reddit thought the wife’s feelings were justified.

“You have been more than generous having her stay that long. It’s time for her to go!” someone wrote.

“Your husband needs to set boundaries and take your feelings into consideration,” another said.

“If you don’t stick to your guns and demand she move out, she never will,” a user said.
