Woman stirs controversy after rejecting friend’s ‘huge’ financial request: ‘I’d feel very uncomfortable’

A woman is only willing to help her friend on one condition and it’s causing a rift between them.

She explained the situation on Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum. Her friend Claire is married to Thomas. Thomas never got along with the Reddit poster, and he once accused her of stealing from Claire. The accusation caused the friends to have a falling out. But after Claire became pregnant she and the Reddit poster became friends again.

“Claire has been struggling with money,” the Reddit poster said. “She has debts and could no longer pay her mortgage. She asked if she, Thomas and their 7-month-old baby could move in with me until they find money to rent an apartment. I agreed to let her and her son move in but not Thomas, given that I’m not on good terms with him. Claire said it wasn’t right to keep her son from his dad, and since she needed help with the baby, then I should reconsider. This is what made me think I was wrong for not letting her husband move in. She’s clearly overwhelmed and needs help.”

However, the Reddit poster just didn’t want to share her home with Thomas.

“But I couldn’t bring myself to see him in my house,” the Reddit poster wrote. “I’d feel very uncomfortable. She said she could make him apologize, but I felt like I was being cornered and pressured into letting him move in. I gave my final decision, which was a ‘No, Thomas can’t move in.’ We had an argument, and she got emotional about it. Our mutual friend said I could suck it up for a month and be patient with Claire since she’s a new mom dealing with postpartum depression and naturally wants her partner to be with her. I still said Thomas isn’t allowed in my home, but I got called resentful for being hung up on the past instead of helping out.”

Reddit users thought the poster had every right to set boundaries.

“His behavior towards you is a huge red flag,” one person said.

“You should rethink your friendship with Claire,” another wrote.

“She’s not a good friend to you,” a user commented.
