Worker killed in industrial accident in Carthage

Feb. 6—CARTHAGE Mo. — A worker was killed in an industrial accident Tuesday afternoon at the Schreiber Foods plant in Carthage.

Carthage police Chief Bill Hawkins said dispatchers received a call from the plant at 127 Claxton Ave. at 3:44 p.m. Tuesday about an entrapment in a machine.

"The caller said the worker fell into an automated palleting machine and was stuck," Hawkins said.

Fire Chief Ryan Huntley said his firefighters were told it was an entrapment and extrication.

"While on the way, dispatch told us that the man had been removed from the machine," Huntley said. "We got there and started CPR and continued that for a while."

Hawkins said the man was unconscious and hemorrhaging when officers and firefighters arrived. He was declared dead before a medical helicopter could get there to take him to an area hospital.

Hawkins said the man was 48 years old but that his identity wasn't being released until family was notified.

He said police officers at the scene found everything as the caller had said, so there would likely be no further investigation on the police side.
