Yahoo Finance Workers’ Party expresses condolences to family of Jean Marshall
SINGAPORE — The Workers’ Party (WP) has expressed its deepest condolences to the family of Jean Marshall, who died on Monday (29 March) at the age of 94.
The wife of the late David Marshall, Singapore’s first Chief Minister and the founding leader of the WP, was a pioneer in the field of medical social work, making contributions to the Red Cross and the Singapore Children’s Society’s convalescent home, the WP said in a statement on Tuesday.
Noting the contributions of the pioneers of her generation, the WP said, “What we have today would not have been possible without their sacrifices. We hope Mrs Jean Marshall’s example and that of her husband Mr David Marshall will inspire those working for the greater good of Singapore society today in both the civil society and political spheres.”
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday wrote a letter to express his deepest condolences to the four children of the couple: Ruth Ann Marshall, Sarah Farha Marshall, Joanna Tamar Marshall, and Dr Jonathan Mark Marshall.
Mourning the death of one of Singapore’s pioneer women, Lee noted that Jean Marshall made important contributions to medical social work.
Jean Marshall was by her husband’s side when the latter served as Singapore’s ambassador to France, offering warm hospitality to Singaporeans and foreigners, said Lee.
He added, “When I visited Paris in 1989, she also took good care of me. Despite the difference in our ages, we got on well together.”
Jean Marshall’s funeral will be streamed live this Saturday from 3.15pm onward.
Her family wrote, “In line with the tradition of her parents, Mrs Marshall requested a very simple funeral with no wake. She understood that due to current safe distancing restrictions, most people would not be able to pay their last respects in-person.”
