World’s first ‘flying sportscar’ to take to the skies next year, costing £90,000
It’s a science fiction vision of the future – where commuters step into a flying car before whisking through the air to work.
But it could become reality sooner than we imagine – with Samson Motors promising a ‘flying sportscar’ by spring 2018, priced at £90,000.
The 200mph Switchblade made by the Oregon company can cruise at 13,000ft and comes equipped, thankfully, with its own parachute.
The Switchblade is a three-wheeled car with extendable wings and a retractable tail.
Unlike other planned ‘flying cars’ it can’t take off straight from the road, and can be driven to an airport, converted into its ‘plane’ mode and then flown.
It’s powered by a 90bhp liquid-cooled 1.6-litre V4 engine, and has a 200mph top speed in the sky, and an 100mph top speed on the ground.

It’s one of several planned ‘flying cars’ in the near future: Volvo’s parent company Geely recently bought flying car start-up Terrafugia, which aims to sell its first cars in 2019.
The Terrafugia TF-X is partially electric-powered, has helicopter-style rotors, and predicted to cost around the price of a luxury car once it is in full production.
The ‘street legal plane’ will carry two travellers and has a range of 400 miles, and a ceiling of 10,000 feet.
