"Wow... I really miss red carpets"

To anyone who’s ever implied that awards-show-arrivals hype is shallow or unimportant, I say: Kindly fuck off. After almost a year without any such events, we should all be able to agree that watching megastars pose for flashing cameras is a crucial part of our collective and individual fashion evolutions. Without it, we’re a little bit stuck.

Yes, thanks for asking, I’ll go on: Iconic red carpet moments—be they Lizzo’s microscopic Valentino purse, Lupita Nyong’o’s Cinderella twirl, or Marilyn Monroe’s chic white stole—spark conversation and give us all reference points for what styles we like… and what styles we hate. We use the opinions we form in heated day-after discussions to consider new trends. Thanks to that Lizzo moment, I jumped on the mini-bag train after previously panning them for their uselessness (sorry, bb purses, I’ve learned the error of my ways).

These live spectacles also just, you know, make us feel like *we* could maybe someday parade down an elite crimson rug. I mean, I realise that, unlike Lizzo, I don’t have incredible musical talent and multiple awards to my name. But I can be inspired by her fashion and pose with my too-small top-handle on the ’gram. And that feels a little like hope for someone who is currently on month 10 of a 10-month joggers streak.

It’s of course not just about Lizzo (but also, Lizzo, can you tell ILU?)—it’s also about all the beauty and fashion risks we’ve missed (lookin’ at you, vintage Cher getups). The dramatic ensembles—which, yes, sometimes end up on worst-dressed lists—at the Golden Globes, Oscars, and Met Gala mean there’s a real diversity of aesthetics in public discourse. And that’s been sorely lacking in the echo chamber of Instagram and TikTok. Go ahead, scroll through:

Don’t get me wrong: I like you too, lug-sole boots and oversize sweaters—but it kind of feels like I’ve embraced you by default versus chosen you from a wide array of scintillating options.

Until the stars finally all align again (in their finest on the step-and-repeat), I’ll just be over here photoshopping my fave celebs’ heads onto runway images and making collages out of them, which is a totally normal and not at all concerning hobby.

Also, this other thing:

I miss the awards shows themselves. Because nothing is more interesting than watching all the most famous people in the world try to function in the same room. The awkwardness! It knows no bounds! Give me Brad running into three of his exes at the Golden Globes. Give me bad teleprompter reads. Give me pass-aggro music cutoffs and “Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture.” Bliss! —Associate Entertainment Editor, Cosmopolitan US, Emma Baty
