Young woman taken aback by her mom’s ‘selfish’ financial request: ‘Has she done stuff like this in the past?’

A 21-year-old is reluctant to let her mom borrow thousands of dollars from her.

She asked Reddit’s “Am I the A******? (AITA)” forum for advice. The young adult has been saving up for months to go on her first trip to Europe. When her mom heard about the trip, the mom seemed supportive. Soon after, however, the mom asked to borrow all the money the Reddit poster saved.

“I have been planning to go to Barcelona since about a year ago,” she said. “It’s somewhere I’ve wanted to go for so long and the first place I’ll ever be going to outside of the United States. I started saving up about four months ago and worked a lot of long hours at work.”

“I finally saved up enough to buy the plane ticket and also a month-long trip to stay at an Airbnb (I have already purchased both of those things). Now I am almost at my goal of what I wanted to save for the actual trip itself. I told my family about it and they were very excited for me. My mom even told me she’d give me some extra money for my trip just in case.”

Then her mom asked to borrow all of the money she had saved.

“Last night she told me she had a favor to ask me,” the poster wrote. “[She] asked me if I could let her borrow all the money I’ve saved (a good few thousand dollars) to get two of her teeth fixed, which she has been wanting to do for a long time. She has two fake teeth in place just until she gets the permanent fake teeth and said if she waits any longer to get the permanent ones, she will have to start all over with the fake temporary ones.”

“She told me she would pay me back all of the money I give her before I leave for my trip, which I am going to be leaving for in about two months. I told her I don’t know and how I’d think about it. She reminded me that she would pay it all back PLUS give me some extra. I told her again I’d have to think about it. She got irritated and told me how she sacrificed so much for my siblings and me growing up so that we can have what we wanted and asked me why I can’t do the same for her. I really don’t think I want to do it because my mom has never been good with money.”

Redditors thought the mom was behaving suspiciously.

“Parents who manipulate their kids through guilt trips for selfish reasons are not being good parents,” a user said.

“It seems more like she’s trying to keep you from going on your trip. Has she done stuff like this in the past?” another asked.

“She’s conning her own daughter,” someone commented.
