Yvonne Strahovski knows dystopian futures – she plays the villain-victim Serena in The Handmaid's Tale. Now, however, she's taking on the role of saviour in The Tomorrow War, co-starring with Chris Pratt.

It's a project unlike anything she's done before. "It was a real fun process and something that was a big learning experience for me." As for the aliens, "I've never really acted with something that wasn't actually there," she told Digital Spy.

"Depending on the shot, often we'd be doing the physical action with nothing there, or we had our incredible stunt guy Troy who's a seven-foot-tall guy with a grey unitard kind of pretending to be an alien, or we'd have a prosthetic prop alien built that was like a big, large puppet."

Seeing it all come together was "incredible", she adds. Watching it back, Strahovski calls it "a wild rollercoaster ride that is super fun and has a tonne of really cool surprises in it".

While reading the "page-turner" script, she said she wanted to know what happened next, adding: "I think it was so special that you have this blockbuster alien action movie that has this really strong backbone, really strong family theme that I think a lot of people are going to relate to."

Yes, The Tomorrow War is about a dystopian future but for Strahovski, the hook was in her character. "The fact that she has so much going on personally – really a lot – and she really has to struggle to put that aside for the sake of the greater good.

"She literally is being tasked with saving the human race from extinction, so it's a huge push and pull. Ultimately, while she's trying to figure out how to save the human race with her scientific knowledge, she's also facing her own demons as the two worlds collide. And to me, that was the most special part."

Separate from the internal, emotional struggle, Strahovski admits that "coming back into the world of action and stunts" was difficult. "I was in my first year of motherhood, so I wasn't fit and you know... I was a new mum! So that was different and definitely challenging at times."

The Tomorrow War is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from July 8.
