Zack Steffen becomes first United States international to win Premier League

Forty-eight United States internationals have played in the Premier League in its 29-year history.

One of them can finally lay claim to the title of champion.

Goalkeeper Zack Steffen became the first American to win the Premier League on Tuesday after Manchester City clinched the title. He appeared in one game this season, a 3-1 win over Chelsea on January 3, and mainly served as the backup to Ederson.

The closest any American had come before to winning the EPL was Tim Howard, who spent four years at Manchester United. The Red Devils didn't win the league his first three seasons there, and he was loaned to Everton in the fourth, where he signed a permanent contract during the winter transfer window in 2007. So he never played for United that campaign, which ended in the club reclaiming the league title.

Steffen is the first-choice keeper for the USMNT, and he signed with Man City two summers ago, spending the 2019-20 season on loan with Fortuna Düsseldorf in the German Bundesliga.

The 26-year-old Pennsylvania native has primarily played this season in the FA Cup and the League Cup, which are both domestic tournaments in England, making 10 total appearances and helping City win the League Cup on April 25. Steffen also started the last game of the Champions League group stage in December, a 3-0 win over Marseille.

He has a chance to become the first American male to play in the Champions League final later this month, although it's expected Ederson will start that match against Chelsea on May 29. Steffen is just one year younger than Ederson, which means continued playing time at City could be hard to come by.

Whatever his future, Steffen is already in the record books.
