Zedd's Brutal Leg Day Workout Helps Him Stay Healthy on the Road

DJ and music producer Zedd is spot on when it comes to giving fans bangers like “Clarity” and “The Middle,” but has the 31-year-old nailed his diet and workout routine as successfully? Men’s Health caught up with the musician at his Los Angeles home for the latest installment of “Gym and Fridge,” where Zedd revealed how he maintains a healthy lifestyle when he’s not on the road.

Traveling for concerts and events can be straining on the body, and keeping up with eating well has been hard for Zedd over the years. Between eating at difficult times of the day and not having much control over how meals are prepared, he said he takes advantage of being home to really tackle his diet.

Something you can always find in Zedd’s fridge are fresh vegetables and citrus fruits. Beets, sweet potatoes, kale, lemons, yuzu and limes are essentials (coming from his own garden, by the way). "It’s nice to know that what you eat is what you grew yourself," he said. Some other staples in his fridge: protein bars and almost every kind of flavored water.

But working out is just as important to Zedd as healthy eating, ensuring that he hits his home gym at least four times a week. Monday is chest and biceps day. Tuesday is leg day. Wednesday is a rest day. Thursday is triceps and back day. And Friday is for shoulders and everything that was covered throughout the week.

“Being onstage, jumping for two hours can be really enduring," he said. "When you’re in good shape and when you do a lot of cardio, it doesn’t feel quite as hard."

Even though building endurance is helpful for maintaining endurance onstage, it doesn’t mean it’s always enjoyable. “I absolutely hate leg day. Every single time. My legs are terrible. I’ve had overextended knees ever since I was a kid and it’s really making everything a lot more difficult. Cardio is tough and leg day is always a brutal workout.”

And while staying consistent in the gym can be a challenge, Zedd tries to keep it interesting.

“Having goals is what keeps me motivated. I used to just workout to workout, and now...I set myself goals, 2-month periods or 3-month periods. To really focus on my goals, that keeps me going.” We guess we don't have an excuse for skipping leg day now.
