The 10 best royal gardens to visit this summer

With the Queen's Platinum Jubilee right around the corner, now is the perfect time to visit the UK's best royal gardens. From Hampton Court Palace to Hever Castle, Cartwright & Butler have used Instagram data to uncover the most popular royal residences — and reveal which are picnic perfect.

'With the Summer months approaching, it's the perfect time to dust off the picnic blanket,' Cartwright & Butler say. 'It was revealed that Kew Garden's is the ultimate spot for a royal picnic, with 683,000 individual posts. In second place was the Grade I listed building, Hampton Court Palace and Gardens.'

With an impressive living plant collection (there are 50,000 in total) and 500 acres of woodland, Kew Gardens has scooped first place. Planning a picnic in the sunshine? Pack some tasty treats and head to the largest botanical garden in London.

Hampton Court Palace has over 500 years of royal history, making it a wonderful place to explore over the Platinum Jubilee weekend. There are over 60 acres of garden, so you won't have to worry about finding the perfect picnic spot.

'Sandringham House is a country house in the parish of Sandringham, Norfolk, England and is one of the royal residences of Queen Elizabeth. Sandringham is also set over 60 acres of gardens, providing great spots for a family picnic,' say Cartwright & Butler.

Stroll around the award-winning gardens at Hever Castle this summer. Once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, it is also traditionally believed that Henry VIII stayed at the castle on several occasions during his courtship with the former Queen.

Taking the fifth spot is Windsor Great Park, home to a deer park, 2,000 hectares and glorious countryside views. Once you've finished your picnic, explore the enchanting woodland trails filled with wild flowers and seasonal displays.

Based in the heart of Surrey, RHS Garden Wisley boasts an exotic garden, a conifer lawn and stunning gardens set next to the River Wey. Add this to your must-visit list...

Over in Cornwall, Tintagel is a brooding 13th-century castle which sits on the rugged and spectacular Atlantic coast. Made famous by the legends of King Arthur, it's a wonderful place to sit and enjoy a picnic right by the glistening waters.

Kenilworth Castle, one of Britain's most iconic castle ruins in the Midlands, also made the top 10. While the whole site is spectacular, its Elizabethan Garden is the real star of the show. Expect pops of colour, perfectly planted flowers and carpets of luscious lawns.

'Previously home to the Astor Family, Cliveden is now part of the National Trust and has stunning gardens overlooking the Thames in Berkshire – the perfect set up for a picnic.'

Taking the final spot is Osborne House, situated on the Isle of Wight. The partial holiday home of Queen Victoria, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.
