These are the 15 worst places in England to grow up poor

Many of Britain’s coastal, rural and former industrial areas are being “left behind economically and hollowed out socially”, a report has shown.

The Social Mobility Commission’s State of the Nation research shows a sharp divide between “hotspots” and “have nots” across all 324 authorities in England.

While London and its commuter belt resemble “a different country”, people’s chances of getting on in life are severely restricted by a postcode lottery of where they are born, the standard of education they receive and job opportunities. Here are the 15 areas of England identified as having the poorest chance of moving up.
