'Ask what you can do for your country' : Prayer in the times of COVID
- 1/18
“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.,” - John F. Kennedy’s historic words, are applicable now more than ever to the entire world's population let alone in India.
- 2/18
The time has passed to play the blame game and hold governments solely resposible for the second wave of the COVID crisis around the world.
- 3/18
Countries with some of the best healthcare systems have failed and there's been a systems breakdown.
- 4/18
India is not the only country where cases spiked within a matter of weeks as it was hit by the second wave of COVID.
- 5/18
The highest number of deaths recorded until as of 27th April, 2021 are in United States, followed by India, then Brazil and France. These countries are well into the 4th wave.
- 6/18
Suport is pouring in for India from other countries who are standing in solidarity to help tide over the pandemic; however, let us not overlook the fact that other countries too are battling the same crisis as we need to extend the same empathy to others.
- 7/18
A country such as New Zealand was able to control the spread of the COVID virus not only through strict implementation of lockdowns, but also with great public compliance.
- 8/18
Once the lockdown was lifted in India, the onus of wearing masks, sanitising hands and maintaining social distance fell on 'We the people', but 'We the people' refused to comply.
- 9/18
In this critical hour of need, blaming governments could be a consolation to nurse our own egos. Yes, the government failed at crisis management as the second wave rose like a monster; but have we possibly failed collectively as a nation at curbing the spread of the coronavirus?
- 10/18
Public functions, rallys, parties, religious gatherings, weddings with scores of people in attendance were being organised rampantly with sheer disregard toward the looming threat of the pandemic.
- 11/18
Did we resist taking the basic required precautions - wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands? The results of which are there for everyone to witness in their near and dear circles. Did we resist taking the vaccine when it was first made available to all those above 45? Were we suspicious of its efficacy?
- 12/18
India is a country of prayer and immense faith in the force above; a country full of people who even bow their head in prayer for their favourite cricket team to win every time they're out on the field playing big matches.
- 13/18
And now the head must bow to pray for survival of the human race amidst this monsterous pandemic.
- 14/18
Arm chair critics have been full of judgements on the handling of the situation by the government. Perhaps they would get a clearer picture were they in the frontline of this war against COVID.
- 15/18
But it is crucial to also ask ourselves... 'Did we comply and cooperate with the rules set our by the medical fraternity and by the governments?'
- 16/18
Did we choose to stay indoors and take all the precautions to prevent the spread of the virus?
- 17/18
Are we ready to do right by our country and put aside religious and political differences to unite in this fight against a virus.
- 18/18
How long before we realise we all look to the same god for help?
