Recycled dresses: All the celebrities following 2020's hottest awards trend

Out with the new, in with the old – at least, that seems to be the newfound mantra among A-listers at this year’s award ceremonies.

While the rich and famous attendees can of course afford luxury designer clothing (or, more likely, will be gifted it by the designers themselves), a number of celebrities at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and last night’s Oscars chose to recycle outfits they had worn in the past.

This includes the Duchess of Cambridge, who turned up at the BAFTAs last month in a Sarah Burton gown with newly-nipped in sleeves, giving us all a sartorial lesson in how an old favourite can be reworked to create a whole new aesthetic.

Then there’s Joaquin Phoenix, who has pledged to wear the same custom-made Stella McCartney suit through all of this year’s awards season.

The newfound fervour for wearing recycled outfits follows a call from the BAFTAs organisers on the official Instagram account for its attendees to wear something with “eco” credentials for the event – and some, if not many obliged, including Saoirse Ronan who wore a dress from recycled satin.

Although the BAFTAs organisers’ request received an underwhelming response during the BAFTAs, a number of figures including Jane Fonda and Elizabeth Banks have picked it up since.

Troian Bellisario took it one step further, donning her wedding skirt for the ceremony.
