Risen from the ashes: stunning Cornish castle hits the market for £7 million

The historic Grade I-listed Ince Castle sits in with 190 acres of land and nestled on its own Cornish peninsula.

Jacobean in origin, Ince Castle was built by Henry Killigrew, an English diplomat and ambassador, in the mid-17th Century.

The castle has 13 bedrooms, a library, drawing room and five further reception rooms.

The castle is in fact a manor house, thought to have been built around 1642, the start of the Civil War. It was captured by parliamentarian troops about four years later.

The house was remodelled in the 1920s under the Arts and Crafts architect Ernest Newton.

Current owner, Lady Patricia Boyd says: “I do like bright, warm colours. The library is probably my favourite room in the house. It’s very adaptable.”

Viscount and Viscountess Boyd bought the property in the 1960s. Following a major fire in 1988, the Boyds put in a central staircase and a modern kitchen, and “generally hauled it into the 20th century”.

Rumour has it that Killigrew kept four wives, one in each of Ince’s four towers, each unknown to the others.

One of the more modern touches is the outside swimming pool, which overlooks the River Lynher.

There are approximately 91.06 acres of rolling pasture and 24.08 acres of woodland that surround the property providing a ring fence without any public rights of way.
