See Inside the Stunning New Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles

Click your heels and you'll be in front of Dorothy Gale's famed ruby slippers.

It's here! The long-awaited opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures happens on Sept. 30, offering visitors a peek at some of the most iconic film artifacts from beloved movies past and present.

The sphere-shaped David Geffen Theater building was designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, while the attached Saban Building is a renovated May Company department store that's stood as a Streamline Moderne landmark in L.A. since 1939.

Inside, a red carpet (naturally) leads to some of the exciting exhibits.

"It matters for Los Angeles to have this film museum," Tom Hanks told press at a preview prior to the venue's grand opening. "We all know that films are made everywhere in the world, and they are wonderful films. And there are other cities with film museums, but with all due respect in a place like Los Angeles, created by the Motion Picture Academy, this museum has really got to be the Parthenon of such places."

The museum's Academy Awards History gallery is full of shimmering statuettes, and the nearby Oscars Experience lets visitors feel like they're walking onstage to receive an award themselves.

The museum's opening exhibitions include elaborate displays dedicated to filmmakers like Spike Lee, whose Do the Right Thing has its own section.

Also in the Stories of Cinema section, the Rosebud sled from Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.

A space all about Bruce Lee includes movie posters and costumes.

Speaking of costumes, there are plenty to see in the Stories of Cinema section of the museum.

At right, the costume worn by Mabel King as Evillene in The Wiz.

The typewriter Joseph Stefano used to write Psycho is featured prominently, alongside pages of the script.

You'll want to phone home after having your own encounter with E.T.

Her blue dresses are on display, too.

As well as props worn by the Cowardly Lion and Wicked Witch.

The full-sized shark model from Jaws is suspended above a set of escalators, for an extra thrill.

Maquettes from movies including Shrek and Frozen punctuate the Stories of Cinema gallery.

As well as costumes like this one from Black Panther.

And Arnold Schwarzenegger's face from The Terminator.

Director Pedro Almodóvar is another who has dedicated space in Stories of Cinema for the grand opening.

The desk used by Disney animator Frank Thomas stands amidst information about beloved cartoon films.

In the first significant and extensive retrospective outside of his native Japan, animation legend Hayao Miyazaki has a large exhibition featuring some of his incredible work.

Another gallery, Backdrop: An Invisble Art, boasts large set pieces like this Mount Rushmore from Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest.

"We've been talking about this at the Academy for the better part of, I think, 20 years," said Hanks, a member of the Board of Trustees who, along with actress Annette Bening and former Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger, spearheaded fundraising efforts for the project. "And the end result exceeds our dreams by about tenfold. It's an extraordinary building. It's an amazing space, it's an inclusive space."
