Lonely Planet has named its much-anticipated top 10 European destinations for a holiday in 2018, and its travel experts have picked an overlooked UK city for the selection.
Dundee in Scotland was chosen as the sixth best place to visit in Europe this year and lauded for its growing cultural scene and exciting transformation of its historic waterfront.
As the fourth largest city in Scotland, Dundee was praised for its 'head-turning' urban redevelopment and the opening of the new V&A Dundee this September. Describing the city, Lonely Planet’s writers hailed its creative scene which 'increasingly attracts some of the UK’s most visionary talent'.
Meanwhile, Italy’s food heartland of Emilia-Romagna took the number one spot. The region, which is often missed by tourists in favour of Italian favourites like Tuscany, Campania and Veneto, is carving out a reputation as the nation’s number one destination for food lovers. Emilia-Romagna is the birthplace of ragu, prosciutto di Parma, balsamic vinegar and Parmesan cheese.
Lonely Planet's top 10 list also unveiled a number of Europe's hidden gems, such as Greece’s Small Cyclades, which offer some of the best Greek islands you've never heard of, including Donoussa, Koufonisia and Iraklia.
The Northern Spanish region of Cantabria was listed thanks to its wild, sandy beaches, mist-shrouded mountains and enchanting villages, while tiny Kosovo made the cut for its dramatic hiking trails, Ottoman-era history and growing cultural scene.
