Appeal court rules Nigerians cannot pursue Shell spill claim in England

LONDON/YENAGOA, Nigeria, Feb 14 (Reuters) - The Court of Appeal in London ruled on Wednesday that two Nigerian communities cannot pursue Royal Dutch Shell (LSE: 0LN9.L - news) in English courts over oil spills in Nigeria's Delta region. The split decision upheld a High Court ruling last year that was a setback to attempts to hold British multinationals liable at home for their subsidiaries' actions abroad. The court rejected the appeal from law firm Leigh Day on behalf of Nigeria's Bille and Ogale communities, and upheld a ruling that English courts do not have jurisdiction over claims against Shell (LSE: RDSB.L - news) 's Nigerian subsidiary Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

The Dutch government aims to adopt a recommendation by the regulator to cut production at the Groningen gas field by nearly half to 12 billion cubic meters per year "as quickly as possible" to limit the risk of earthquakes. Economy Minister Eric Wiebes did not give a timeframe for the plan on Thursday, but it will likely take several years. The government has lowered output from Groningen several times as decades of extraction have led to dozens of earthquakes each year, damaging thousands of homes and buildings.

BP invests $5 mln in FreeWire in electric vehicle move

BP Plc said it had invested $5 million in U.S. mobile electric vehicle charging company FreeWire, helping it provide rapid charging at its retail sites in Britain and Europe, as demand for cleaner vehicles is expected to soar. BP joins rival Royal Dutch Shell (LSE: 0LN9.L - news) , which last year agreed to buy Dutch-based NewMotion, the owner of one of Europe's largest electric vehicle charging networks, marking the company's first deal in electric mobility. The expected rapid growth in the use of electric vehicles in the coming decades is threatening oil companies' business model as demand for some road fuels could plateau as early as the late 2020s.

Dutch gas regulator says will miss Jan. 25 deadline on Groningen

The Dutch gas regulator will miss a Jan. 25 deadline to issue a recommendation for limits on production at the Groningen gas field following the latest in a series of earthquakes. Regulator SodM was asked to provide advice on a new production cut after the northern Dutch region was hit by the strongest earthquake in years on Jan 8. Both the regulator and gas production company NAM, a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell (LSE: 0LN9.L - news) and Exxon Mobil (Swiss: XOM-USD.SW - news) , have said that production needs to be cut substantially from the current level of 21.6 billion cubic metres (bcm) per year to limit seismic risks in the region.
