Scandal-hit French care homes company Orpea rebrands to emeis

Orpea has been in turmoil since the beginning of 2022, when allegations of mistreatment in its French care homes in a book by journalist Victor Castanet sent shockwaves throughout France and much soul-searching over how the elderly are treated in nursing homes. Orpea said its new name comes from ancient Greek and translates to "us" and by using it, the company wants to underline its focus on prioritising all stakeholders, it said. The group also underwent a financial restructuring in which investors led by France's Caisse des dépôts et consignations (CDC) took control of it, making France's government Orpea's main shareholder.

Orpea expects FY core earnings of around 710 million euros

"The negative impact of the weaker-than-projected operating performance is largely offset by precautionary measures implemented such as reduced or postponed capital expenditure, and by the receipt of proceeds from asset disposals," the company said in a statement. Orpea last month said it was targeting full-year earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and rent costs (EBITDAR) at the lower end of the 705 million to 750 million euros range announced in July. The group posted third-quarter revenue of 1.31 billion euros, up 10.2% organically, with an average occupancy rate of 83.8%, up 1.8 percentage points from last year.

Care home group Orpea sees annual profit at lower end of guidance

"We have an inflationary environment that continues to impact us, both in terms of staff costs and all other expenses," the company said in a call with journalists. Orpea posted EBITDAR of 336 million euros in the first half of 2023, down from 427 million euros a year earlier. Orpea said it expected a ruling in the first half of November on a shareholder appeal against French markets watchdog AMF's decision that a consortium led by Caisse des Depots (CDC) could take control of the group without having to file a takeover bid.
