As the Federal Communications Commission's spectrum auction nears closure, Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. soon will have an opening for merger talks. Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure has said the Overland Park-based company (NYSE: S) would be a " formidable partner to potentially merge with another carrier ," without specifying the owner.

Sprint Corp. maintained its third-place ranking for overall performance in RootMetrics' most recent nationwide report. Verizon Wireless, a unit of New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), swept the nationwide results, leading the pack in overall performance and in every category — network speed, reliability, data, call and text — during the second half of 2016. Sprint (NYSE: S) made a marked improvement in its voice network, coming in second to Verizon nationally and leading in several metropolitan areas.
